Chapter 4. Advanced Xaml > Embedding and Distributing Fonts

Embedding and Distributing Fonts

Silverlight does not ship with a collection of fonts. Instead, Silverlight depends on the local system fonts to render text. Although this is fine for most applications, it does introduce some challenges. The fonts on one system (such as Windows) may not render consistently with fonts on another system (such as Mac OS X) and therefore discrepancies in the display of textual data can occur.

Silverlight uses a fallback system for fonts. To specify a fallback font, simply provide a comma-separated list of fonts. Silverlight will find the first font that it is able to satisfy and render that font. If the runtime is unable to locate any of the supplied fonts, it will default to the “Portable User Interface” font, which uses specific local fonts for each target platform.
