20.1. Overview

An administrator’s job is never done. There is always one more task that must be investigated before going home at the end of the day. What if there was a way to only have to do a task once and any subsequent requests would either be done automatically for you or with a lot less effort? WebSphere V5 provides the tools and functionality to make that dream a reality.

WebSphere V5 includes some new tools to make automating a WebSphere environment easier. Tools such as a new command line interface, wsadmin, allow you script out commands you want WebSphere to perform or interactively control WebSphere from a text-based console. WebSphere V5 also includes specialized Ant tasks, providing developers easier integration with existing Ant build scripts. WebSphere’s implementation of the Java Management Extensions (JMX) specification allows administrators to write their own administration tools or use existing third-party tools.
