JSON – An Alternative to XML?

JSON – An Alternative to XML?

We use XML in many data exchange situations. XML is simple to learn and use, is quite standardized, and can be used almost universally. Surrounding technologies in XML also make it possible to validate, parse, and transform XML at will. No wonder that XML has become one of the most sought after and almost mandatory skills.

There is a criticism that XML is sometimes overused, or is used in situations where it need not be used. A classic example of this situation is the Ajax technology. Because the last alphabet in the word Ajax indicates XML, it is often wrongly believed that Ajax cannot work without XML. This is completely false. In fact, in some situations, using XML in Ajax applications actually defeats the whole purpose of using Ajax to make the applications asynchronous (and therefore, much faster). This is simply because XML data is text-oriented. This means that one byte represents one character, and the more the contents we have in our XML document, the slower will be the download of XML data onto the browser.
