Harry Truman advised that "If a man can accept a situation in a place of power with the thought that it's only tem- porary, he comes out all right. But when he thinks he is the cause of the power, that can be his ruination." When maintaining and growing power becomes the central focus, then everyone seems to be a potential source of competition. It can result in increased stereotyping and aggression, and correspondingly less niceness and cooperative behavior.
