I found the writing clear. The book covers a wide range of important XML topics, including DTDs, Schemas, CSS, XSLT, XSL-FO, XSLT, XPath,
DOM, XQuery, and integration of XML with relational databases. There are plenty of examples.
Question authority? Yes, especially the authority of a reviewer who admits to having read only the first chapter of the book and who employs such questionable logic as "The author is not an authority on A or B; therefore, the author is not an authority on C" (Anonymous Amazon reader, "worst ever xml book," 2006-03-05). Another reviewer complains of a lack of examples (Anonymous Amazon reader, "Poorly written", 2006-03-23). Given the chapter-length examples on substantial applications of XML such as SVG, iTunes, Google Maps, and RSS, I can't help wondering what kind of examples it would take for this reader to recognize them as "actual examples that matter." I've never written a book review for publication on a web site before, but am moved to do so today because of the unfairness of these two reviews.
