Chapter 11. Modifying Data with DiffGrams

Chapter 11. Modifying Data with DiffGrams

In the previous chapter, I described how to use updategrams to perform data modifications in an XML-centric fashion. In this chapter, I’ll examine another XML-based data modification technique: DiffGrams. At first glance, DiffGrams appear to be almost identical to updategrams—they certainly serve the same purpose, and, like updategrams, they represent before and after images of data using XML. However, a closer inspection of DiffGrams reveals some differences from updategrams. In general, DiffGrams have fewer options available than updategrams, and their syntax is less verbose.

Support for data modifications through DiffGrams was added in SQLXML 2.0 and further enhanced in SQLXML 3.0. DiffGrams are particularly useful in Microsoft .NET Framework applications, because DataSet objects can use the DiffGram format to persist their data.
